Building on the caliber 9300 series the 9904 adds more than just a moonphase complication and a different way to indicate the date. The movement is now fully METAS certified and a “Master Chronometer” (debuted with the Omega Globemaster), which implies a few things. First is that the movement has all the Omega-made anti-magnetic parts. Of course, the movement is also a Co-Axial Escapement. On top of that, the METAS certification (more on that here) requires a lot of durability and performance out of not just the movements but the movements cased up in the complete watch, so the overall set of “assurances” for the consumer are much higher than something like COSC Chronometer certification alone.
The opinion also came with an OEM NATO strap… Now while the price on those straps by themselves is crazy (+/- $125) it is easily the best made NATO I have ever used.The Speedmaster is a good watch to have an assortment of straps for. Additionally, it wears on leather really nicely if you’re not into steel bracelets as much. It’s also a great watch to wear a NATO and I think it would look at home on almost anything except perhaps rubber.It ought to be pretty evident by this review that I’m a huge Speedmaster fan-boy. I believe that when I had to own just 1 watch, it’d be a taste of a Speedmaster. Now how does the Speedmaster work for somebody that may not be a super-fan but does like watches? It is a good general usage piece if you’re not going near water. The watch works nicely, keeps great time, also contains one of the more useful complications, a chronograph. It’s a watch with enough history and provenance it can be something that you talk about with friends and not come off as “the bizarre watch dude.” Perhaps I’m the only one who has that problem.Anyway, I can’t recommend the Speedmaster enough.
